Our hatred for those unlike us

For the human being, there is the deep-seated belief that we are the best version there could be. We never want to consider, even for a moment, that maybe there is a better way than ours. This is not as simple as having a healthy self-esteem. In fact, there is nothing healthy about this bull-headed sense of our own rightness and perfection. Every other person needs to change but not us.
I am a Christian; anybody who isn’t has not found THE WAY
I am Yoruba, any other tribe is inferior
I am a man, people of the other gender should submit to me
I am married, singles should give me due respect solely for that reason
I am a lawyer/attorney; I am the only learned fellow
I am a soldier; every other person is a bloody civilian
I am a journalist, every other person is uninformed
I am a mother, barren women hardly qualify as women
I am rich, poor people are lazy slobs
I am slender, overweight people are gross
I am heterosexual, homosexuals should be hanged
We instinctively believe that there is something inherently defective in those unlike us. They are incomplete, they have a screw missing, they are faulty projects completed in a hurry.
A task we are not ready to undertake is to consider that there doesn’t have to be one perfect example of specie.
That a Christian and a Muslim just have a different interpretation of the same God.
That a man complements a woman much the same way a woman complements a man.
That a journalist needs uninformed people for him to remain relevant and in business.
That though a lawyer could be learned, he may not know the intricacies of his car the way an auto-mechanic does.
That having children of one’s own blood is not what qualifies a woman for the title of mother.
That marriage never adds to people’s intelligence quotient.
That the gay guy you so much despise was a victim of sexual abuse of such an extent you couldn’t have survived.
That the so called deficiencies we see in others are simply another form of expression that add colour and flavour to this world we have such a short time staying at.
Free yourself. Embrace diversity. Appreciate differences.
We are all unique.
We all are entwined in a way we cannot explain. We need each other to excel and no matter how superior you think you are, you cannot survive alone.
Learn to accommodate people and also view the world from the eyes of another. It makes the world a beautiful place.

How to avoid exchange rate loss while traveling

With the volatility in the exchange rates in recent times , there is a need to get acquainted with some tips that will guard against you running into exchange rate loss when travelling abroad .
According to experts, you can avoid the pitfalls of low exchange rates, high commission charges and unexpected fees , among others , when spending money overseas .
Ever wondered the best way to exchange foreign currencies? Always wanted to know more about international payment methods? Exchange rates , transaction fees and international payment methods will be no mystery to you if you understand what currency exchange entails .
According to www. internations . org , exchange rates can change multiple times a day . So make sure that you get the best rate.
Even if you decide to use international money transfer to wire most of the money you will need abroad , you can hardly avoid exchanging currencies at one point or another . Especially if you are travelling overseas on a small budget, it is important to shop around for good offers .
The amount you wish to exchange also determines where you should turn to for the best deals . If you are moving abroad long -term or even for good, you will most likely need to exchange big lump sums. However , if you just plan to travel abroad for a fact -finding trip , leisure or short business trip, the question is whether you should exchange your money at home or upon arrival .
Having bought your mandatory personal or business travel allowance from the Central Bank of Nigeria through your local bank, there are certain decisions you need to make as to how to spend the dollar with you abroad in order to avoid exchange rate loss in the country you are travelling to .
Exchange fees and rates – Research is key
If you wish to exchange a big sum ahead of time , you should enquire at your bank, online or at currency exchange centres . Make sure to do your research and shop around for the best deals. Exchange rates usually change daily and sometimes even fluctuate throughout the day. Thus , you should make sure that you have a clear idea of the current exchange rate in the country you are travelling to . This will help you to get the best deal upon arrival.
Still, it is important that you do not just pay attention to the exchange rate. After all , commission and other ( more hidden) fees may make a huge difference. It also helps to make as few transactions possible to keep fees to a minimum .
Global Partner
If you just need a little change to get by , it makes sense to use your debit card to withdraw money upon arrival . The rates are often better than those of foreign exchange counters . If your bank has an agreement with a partner institution abroad , you may be able to avoid transaction fees altogether.
Things to keep in mind
While you may be used to carrying only very little cash and paying with your debit or credit card , you may not be able to avoid exchanging some money. As we mentioned above, the method of exchanging currency largely depends on the amount you wish to exchange and the country where you plan to do so . Still , there are some things you need to keep in mind.
First, try to avoid the exchange bureaus at airports or in major tourist areas , even if they promise you a “ no - fee exchange ” or “ zero per cent commission. ” These places try to attract gullible tourists with misleading claims of offering the best deals. In reality, however , they hide their fees in poor exchange rates . You will end up paying way more than you would have if you had simply withdrawn money from an ATM .
Since you are already carrying PTA dollarsbought from Nigeria , it is better you try to make enquiry about the exchange rate at a local bank in your host country . They often offer rates that may be cheaper than those at the airports . There are other centres you can exchange money in some countries. Try to find out .
While your credit card may prove to be particularly convenient when it comes to small purchases, it should be handled with care when it comes to cash withdrawals . Most credit cards come with a relatively high international transaction fee.

If you withdraw money from an ATM , you will be charged very high interest and a hefty fee on top of that. Unless it’s a case of emergency , try to only use your debit card for ATM withdrawals and stick to your credit card for smaller purchases . (It also makes sense to inquire about international transaction fees ahead of time .)

The gunmen had on Saturday killed the two men, who were together with a lady in a Honda Civic.

FG's economic model can't work,says sanusi

The Emir of Kano , Muhammadu Sanusi ll , on Wednesday, faulted the present administration’ s economic model, saying it would not work .
Sanusi, who spoke at the Kaduna State Economic Summit in Kaduna, the state capital , also berated northern leaders , saying the North -West and the North- East remained the poorest parts of the world .
The monarch , who spoke on the theme ‘ Promoting investments in the midst of economic challenges’ , said the North, as a region , constituted the highest of the nation ’ s population , but lacked the necessary indices for progress.
Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria , said the Federal Government was borrowing unsustainably .
He noted that currently , Nigeria was spending 66 per cent of its revenues to pay interests on debts, saying such a model would not work .
Sanusi stated , “ The Federal Government of Nigeria is spending 66 per cent of its revenues on interests on debts, which means only 34 per cent of revenues is available for capital and recurrent expenditures.
“ That model cannot work . If you look at the 2017 budget of the Federal Government , I sometimes wonder what Nigerian economists are doing? In the 2017 budget presented by the Federal Government , the amount earmarked for debt servicing is in excess of the entire non - oil revenue of the Federal Government , but that is not the problem . The problem is that it is a budget that is even going for more debts. ”
He wondered when the Federal Government would stop borrowing if the government was spending 66 per cent of its revenues to pay interests on debts.
The emir said government at all levels should realise that borrowing had reached its limit and should therefore look for ways to attract investments.
“ Growth can only come from investments. It cannot come from consumption . It cannot come from government balance sheet . It cannot come from borrowing because you cannot borrow unsustainably , ” he said .
…faults loan from China
Sanusi also faulted the Federal Government on its plan to borrow money from China.
The monarch added , “ We have governors ; they go to China and spend one month on a tour and what do they come back with , MoU ( Memorandum of Understanding ) on debts.
“ China will lend you $1. 8bn to build light rail . This light rail will be done by the rail workers from China. The trains will come from China. The engines will come from China . The labour comes from China . The driver is Chinese .
“ At the end of the day , what do you benefit from it? Your citizen will ride on a train and when you ride on a train , in northern Nigeria , in a state like Kano or Katsina , where are you going to ? You are not going to an industrial estate to work . You are not going to school? You are not going to the farm . You borrow money from China to invest in trains so that your citizens can ride on them and go for weddings and naming ceremonies . ”
North- West , North - East the poorest parts of the world – Emir
He stated that the North -West and the North- East would have been the poorest in the world , if they were a nation .
Sanusi added , “ We are living in denial. The North- West and the North- East, demographically , constitute the bulk of Nigeria ’ s population , but look at human development indices , look at the number of children out of school, look at adult literacy , look at maternal mortality , look at infant mortality , look at girl-child completion rate, look at income per capita , the North-East and the North -West Nigeria , are among the poorest parts of the world .
“ As far back as 2000, I looked at the numbers, Borno and Yobe states , UNDP figures : Borno and Yobe states , if they were a country on their own , were poorer than Niger , Cameroon and Chad .
“ Nobody saw this because we were looking at Nigeria as a country that averages the oil -rich Niger Delta, the industrial and commercial -rich Lagos , the commercially viable South -East, and you have an average .
“ Break Nigeria into its component parts , and these parts of the country are among the poorest , if it were a country. And we do not realise we are in trouble . ”
Sanusi said for the region to leap forward developmentally, it must fix it social and religious problems.
He pointed out that women and children must be loved , not beaten, adding that the region must do away with the 13th century mindset of religion and culture.
Sanusi stated , “ Other Muslim nations have pushed forward girl- child education , they’ ve pushed forward science and technology. They have pushed forward the arts. We have this myth in northern Nigeria , where we try to create an Islamic society that never existed . ”
He added that the northern Muslims had adopted an interpretation of culture and religion that was rooted in the 13th century mindset , which refused to recognise that the rest of the Muslim world had moved on .
He recalled that books , preaching love, were being burnt in northern Nigeria , calling for a better interpretation of Islamic views so that better life could be provided for women and the girl- child.
Sanusi stated , “ We need to understand the roots of the problem of northern Nigeria . Burning books, it happened in Kano. What is the crime of those books? They were writing about ( love) , and love apparently is supposed to be a bad word.
“ In a society where you don’ t love your women and you don’ t love your children, you allow them to beg , you beat up your women, why should anyone talk about love?
“ We have adopted an interpretation of our culture and our religion that is rooted in the 13th century mindset that refuses to recognise that the rest of the Muslim world has moved on .
“ Today in Malaysia, you wake up and divorce your wife ; that is fine. But you give her 50 per cent of all the wealth you acquired since you married her. It is a Muslim country . In Nigeria , you wake up after 20 years of marriage, you say to your wife , ‘ I divorce you ’ , and that’ s it .
“ Other Muslim nations have pushed forward girl -child education ; they’ ve pushed forward science and technology. They have pushed forward the arts. We have this myth in northern Nigeria , where we try to create an Islamic society that never existed .
“ We are fighting culture , we are fighting civilisation . We must wage an intellectual war , because Islam is not univocal . There are many voices, there are many interpretations , there are many viewpoints, and we have for too long allow the ascendancy of the most conservative viewpoints. The consequences of that are that there are certain social problems. ”
…knocks Yari over comments on meningitis
Sanusi also knocked the Governor of Zamfara State , Abdulaziz Yari, on his comments on meningitis, which has killed no fewer than 200 persons in the state.
The governor had, on Tuesday, blamed the deaths from meningitis attack on the sins of the people against God .
But Sanusi said he was pained that a governor should make such an outrageous statement when he was supposed to look for vaccines to stop the deaths .
“ I ’ m sorry about a current issue yesterday ( Tuesday) . Two hundred people died of meningitis in a state, the governor was asked and he said it was God ’ s curse on us for the sin of fornication , which does not happen in America , which is why they don’ t have meningitis, ” he said .
The monarch, who has a degree in Islamic Law, added that such a statement shouldn ’ t have come from the governor , insisting that he( Yari) should have treated those who had contracted the disease .
He lamented that while Nigerians were thinking of how to come out of the economic recession, the executive and National Assembly were busy fighting each other on political issues.
Sanusi stated , “ If you have been reading and watching the news for the last one month, the big and concerned news politically is about leadership but unfortunately, the conversation is not about electricity, infrastructure , education , health care .
“ All the conversations are about the National Assembly , the executive, the judiciary, conflict between this politician and that politician as well as confirmation of the EFCC boss. ”
Appealing to politicians , he said , “ Let us stop playing politics and talk about education and health care . When we get to late 2018, you stop working and politicise, we will understand that , but for now , it is too early . You can’ t be in politics for four years . ”
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa ’ ad Abubakar III, berated the nation ’ s political class at the event that attracted captains of industry both from within and without.

Between fayose and fayemi

Last week , former governor of Ekiti State , now Minister of Solid Minerals , Dr . Kayode Fayemi, seemingly flew a kite when, in a newspaper interview, he opined that the 2014 governorship tussle in Ekiti , which he lost to Governor Ayo Fayose , was still an “ unfinished business ” . He could be approaching the Supreme Court soon to once again try and get the apex court to reverse itself and void incumbent Fayose ’ s victory in that election , he claimed . Expectedly , that challenge drew Fayose to the edge of his seat. Immediately , he responded , denouncing Fayemi and declaring that he ( Fayose ) would fight to the finish .
To many , Fayemi merely flew a kite . He was trying to unsettle Fayose as well as trouble the political waters. Of late , Fayose has been having the Ekiti political space all to himself , riding high especially after hosting the meeting of the South - West governors ; South -West PDP leaders ; the carnival -like celebration of the International Women’ s Day ; not to forget his recent appointment as chairman of the PDP Governors ’ Forum .
Rather than abandon the Ekiti turf to Fayose , Fayemi may have decided to give the sleeping dog a side- kick !
Besides, the pushing and shoving towards next year ’ s governorship election in Ekiti may have started in earnest . Fayemi’ s first hurdle , obviously , is the Herculean task of besting the motley crowd of aspirants from his own party. The best way to rally the party around Fayemi is to tackle Fayose ; hence, he flew the kite of a return to the Supreme Court with “ fresh facts ” to wrest the mandate from Fayose .
But will the Supreme Court reverse itself on the Ekiti 2014 governorship election ? Justice Chukwudifu Oputa , JSC was at his best elements when he declared: “ We are final not because we are infallible ; rather , we are infallible because we are final ” In other words, their Lordships admit their humanity and that human errors may occur; even at that , it does not vitiate the fact that the Supreme Court is the last bus stop in the adjudication trajectory. The Supreme Court reversing itself is, therefore , the exception rather than the rule .
Supreme Court justices have been very careful not to give politicians an inch in this regard; mindful of the fact that if they do , Nigerian politicians especially will take a mile and the name, honour, reputation , integrity, and standing of the Judiciary will take a serious bashing . Fayemi’ s case is not likely going to be different . If he approaches the Supreme Court again on the same Ekiti 2014 election matter , it is likely he will be turned back ; he may also receive a rebuke for abuse of court process .
Fayose is more than half - way through into his second and final tenure and governorship election is due in Ekiti next year. What is the import of still running around the courts shopping for rulings when smart politicians are already traversing the nook and cranny of the state discreetly soliciting votes and support against 2018? Fayemi’ s actual goal may not be uprooting Fayose but rallying the APC to himself so as to gain a head room in a crowded APC field of governorship aspirants , all of whom are chasing just one broom

Ibori was still serving his jail term in United Kingdom for fraud when Alamieyeseigha died on October 10, 2015, of a high- blood- pressure - related ailment at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State .
The ex - Delta governor was accompanied on the visit by political leaders and stakeholders from Delta State , including the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly , Mr . Monday Igbuya .
Ibori described Alamieyeseigha as a patriotic leader who was very courageous and outspoken and stood on the side of his people at all times.

18 yeara old girl forced into sex with 1,000 men

A teenage girl was forced to have sex with more than 1, 000 men over two years at a motel in Philadelphia , a lawsuit claims .
The girl was forced into ‘ sex slavery ’ with men up to four times her age at the Roosevelt Inn in the north -east of the city , her lawyer has claimed .
The teenager , who was just 14 when the alleged abuse began , is suing the motel , its manager and the company that owns it.
The now 17- year- old girl claims she was paid $50 to have sex with several hundred men at the motel after being forced into prostitution in 2013, CBS Philadelphia reported .
The lawsuit claims the alleged ordeal continued into 2014.
The motel is alleged to have provided rooms for human traffickers, but the motel ’ s 72-year- old manager , Yagna Patel, denied any knowledge of this .
The lawsuit claims the defendants ‘ knew or had constructive knowledge’ that the girl was ‘ being sexually exploited. ’
Traffickers are alleged to have advertised sex with the girl online , before encouraging men to come to the motel after agreeing a price over the phone, Philly . com reported .
When they arrived , a hotel clerk would show them to the girl’ s room , according to the lawsuit, which names a staff member, ‘ Abdul ’ , who was supposedly aware of the abuse .
The lawsuit claims that motel workers should have noticed tell-tale signs of abuse , such as the room allegedly regularly containing used condoms.
It also claims that the room ‘ frequently smelled of marijuana’ and that men and minors were allegedly seen leaving it.
The girl was allegedly treated ‘ aggressively ’ and would have seemed scared, court documents claim , adding that she often ‘ dressed in a sexually explicit manner . ’
“ This child was forced into sex slavery , paid to do things with men double , triple, quadruple her age , ” her attorney Nadeem Bezar said .
Fellow lawyer Tom Kline added : “ You have to be blind deaf and dumb not to know that over 100 men are showing up over a period of a couple days.
“ You have a cleaning crew that comes into the room and often times finds boxes or waste cans full of used condoms. This is about as open and obvious as it gets .
“ You can’ t have a line of johns out the front door and around the room waiting without them knowing the linen service was extraordinary. The front desk would direct the traffic to the room of this child. ”
The teenager , who is in therapy, is suing for $50, 000 in compensation.
Patel claimed he was unaware of the abuse or the lawsuit and said : “ We just rent the room and that’ s all we can do. ”
